The Battle of Chosin Reservoir was the eastern front of the Second Phase Offensive of the Korean War and one of the bloodiest battles of the conflict. At the time, the Chinese People's Volunteer Army's 9th Army Group, with a superior force of 160,000 troops, successfully surrounded and cut off about 30,000 men from the US 1st Marine Division and a portion of the US 7th Infantry Division in the Chosin Reservoir area of northeastern Korea. The US 1st Marine Division suffered heavy casualties, with 13,961 killed, wounded, or missing. The 9th Army Group, which severely mauled the US 1st Marine Division, also paid a huge price: over 14,000 battle casualties and a staggering 30,732 non-combat losses due to frostbite. Due to extreme cold, insufficient supplies, firepower disparity, and US air superiority, the Chinese volunteers failed to achieve the objective of completely annihilating the entire US 1st Marine Division. However, this battle reversed the defensive posture of the Chinese and North Korean forces and thoroughly shattered the "United Nations Command's" illusion of conquering Korea within three months. The Battle of Chosin Reservoir set a record in the Korean War for annihilating an entire US regiment, forcing the US Army's elite unit to undergo what was described as "the longest retreat" in its history.
