Synopsis：In the third year of the Xuantong era, Laixi, a poor boy from a remote mountain village, sees the eunuch Xiao Dezhang returning to his hometown in glory and becomes envious. Despite his mother's (played by Gui Yalei) reluctance, his father (played by Lam Ching-ying) persuades her to have their son castrated and sent to the palace, hoping to secure food and warmth for the family. As an adult, Laixi (played by Mok Siu-chung) does not find the prosperity he expected. Soon, the Republic of China overthrows the Qing dynasty, and all eunuchs in the palace are dismissed. Laixi joins a theater troupe, apprenticing under the master (played by Sammo Hung), and reunites with his childhood friend Zhao Di (played by Irene Wan). Zhao Di mistakenly believes he is a revolutionary and wants to marry him, but upon learning of his eunuch status, she leaves in disappointment. To escape the warlords' pursuit, Laixi sneaks back into the Forbidden City, where he is taken care of by Eunuch Ding (played by Wu Ma). After a series of political upheavals, Laixi and Eunuch Ding are expelled from the palace once more. At this point, a pregnant Zhao Di reappears before Laixi. Years later, just as Laixi believes he can finally find happiness, Zhao Di's revolutionary husband (played by Andy Lau) shows up. Meanwhile, Eunuch Ding, clinging to his blind loyalty to the emperor, tries to persuade Laixi to accompany him to the Japanese consulate to look after Puyi. What path will Laixi choose?
